Silver Coin Venue - Bottom of the Cup

Starting on Tuesday, September 2nd, the Bottom of the Cup will be hosting the first ever “Silver Coin Invitational”.  This tournament is reserved for Atlanta Poker Club members who have earned a “Silver Coin” from past accomplishments with the APC.

This venue will take place on Tuesdays at 7:30 at Bottom of the Cup Golf in Braselton.

To be eligible to play in this event you need to:

  1. Place 1st or 2nd in the Speed Tourney(s) that take place at 6:30pm (ALL APC’ers welcome to try their luck in these tournaments).
  2. Earned a coin from the APC from either a Venue Championship, Venue Points Championship, Season Points Championship, Seasonal Championship Allstar Championship or winner of special large event such as the WSOP Quad 4’s / Jeffreys Challenge etc.
  3. To those without coins - there will be a way where you can win a seat in this tournament. There will be two speed tournaments started at 6:30 and the top 2 from each 1 table tournament get a seat in the Silver Coin event. That means 4 non coin holders can play, regardless of whether or not you earned a silver coin in the past.

Here is the current list of qualified players as best as can be recalled from the history of the APC.  If you have won a coin (or a championship) and your name is not on the list, please visit this thread in the forum to add your name.

APC Ring Game Simulation at Bottom of the Cup Golf

APC Cash Game Night Simulation
*please note that there is absolutely NO GAMBLING of any kind allowed and this is ONLY for points which have NO monetary value.

Bottom of the Cup Ring Game SimulationDetails: Ring Game simulation. - Timed event non-tourney style event. Blinds never raise the goals is not to be the last player with the chips, but to accumulate as many chips as possible in the time alloted. Essentially this is just like playing a ring game at a casino (2/5 no limit)

Points will be tracked on a TOTALLY SEPERATE leaderboard than the normal APC Tournament Leaderoboard. These Ring Game points will not affect your tournament points in any way, shape or fashion since this is a TOTALLY NEW way to play poker for points with the Atlanta Poker Club.

The points system is easy: 1 chip = 1 point.

When you get chips from the TD you have a NEGATIVE point number given to you.
When you turn your chips in to the TD at the end you have a POSITIVE point amount given to you.
The difference in chips at the end of the night is your points earned or lost.

*remember, this is totally seperate from the normal APC leaderboard, points won or lost here DO NOT affect your normal APC points and is kept totally seperate from normal APC tournament points.

For example:

I go to Bottom of the Cup on opening night, Tuesday July 29nd. The TD gives me 300 chips to play with. The TD notes my name and name on the sign in form. Jason Spry, 300 chips. At the end of the night the chips are counted and your points are calculated on the spot. In this example my total chip count is now up to 450 chips, or 150 more than what I started with.

The TD notes my total positive chip count of 450 and my total negative chip count of 300 which leaves me + 150 chips or positive 150 points. My points will be recorded as 150 points for the night. (again, on a seperate leaderboard).

The following week I play and lose my first 300 chips before the break and get 300 more after break time and lose it as well for a -600 points. My overall points now is 150 - 600 for a total points of negative 450 (-450).

Chips have absolutely no monetary value at all, they are free and they are only for points.

Ring Game Structure

Blinds are 2 / 5
Starting Chips: 300 Chips to Start
Bet amounts must be in multiples of 5.
Play for 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Take First Break - Those who have busted out already can get an additional 300 chips. Those below 300 chips can be topped off to 300. Remember these extra chips count against your point total.
Blinds Never Increase
7:30 Start Time
11:30 Finish Time

The first 2/5 No Limit Ring Game Simulation starts on Tuesday, July 29th at 7:30 PM. Registration starts 1 hour earlier.  The first 40 people to register are eligible to play!  Interested?  Learn more and discuss this in the forum.

You are free to come and play at any point in the evening, so come on out and have some fun!

Season 13 Grand Champion | John Furg

Most people go through their APC career and hope they can take down a Grand Championship. Well John has decided to up the ante and add a second Grand Championship to his resume.

John Furg | Season 13 Grand Champion

I asked John a few questions about his most recent Grand Championship and here is what he had to say.

So John, I know when I have won most of my tourneys, I had a feeling going in if I was going to do well or not. What was your mindset going into this tourney? Well, here’s the straight poop. When I got up Saturday morning I was waffling about even going to the game. It’s a long ride & I really hadn’t had any success over the past 2 seasons. I had actually taken a break midway through season 13, but my 900, some odd, points qualified me. It was my wife who talked me into going. So I went in with low expectation.

At what point during the tourney did you think you had a realistic shot at taking it down? Much of the game is a blur. I seemed to float between 3000 & 7000, moving from table to table. It was around the time that we were down to 2 tables that I made some questionable moves that just seemed to work out with some favorable flops & a runner runner flush when I bluffed into a pot with 6/7 H. All of a sudden I’m sitting on 40K+ & realize that I have a real shot. So, a new mind set was born & I got real focused.

Were there any key hands that you can recall that helped take you to victory? I know I got lucky on a few hands before the runner runner flush, but in my mind, the key hand went like this. With 5 players left & sitting on around 60k, Travis had raised my big blind the last 4 or 5 go arounds. He did it again & before looking at my cards I said, “You know, one of these times I’m going to look down & see a hand”. Sure enough A/J. I thought a minute & said. ” If I call I think the winner of this hand will win this thing. I’m fine with your taking down back to back GC’s. Let’s see what happens.” Travis had shoved in 40+k & I still had about 20 left over. He turned over A/8 & 2 J’s popped up on the board.

Anything else notable you can recall about the tourney for those of us that may not have been there to see? When we were down to 3, Steve C called Ann’s all-in & it was down to heads up fairly even in chips. Ann gave me fits. About 5 minutes into to the heads up we were both all in (I honestly don’t remember what either of us had) and I won thinking it was all over as a big shit eating grin came across my face. It was not to be. She still had a few chips & the the next 2 hands were automatic all-ins for me. She won both & eventually got back to a small chip lead. Then came another all-in about 30 minutes later &, once again, I thought it was all over. NO… she still had a few chips left. I said, “Here we go again”! Next hand she goes all in with pocket 2’s, I call with 9/4 off & hit a 4 in the window & after 40 minutes of head to head it was finally over. This is one good upcoming player, Ann D. !

Very cool, any final words? Let me say this. A few players walked away from the table shaking their head because I had some real lucky boards being behind going in. I don’t think you can win a tournament without a little luck coming your way on hands where you are behind. I’ve been on the other end more times than I’d like to remember. It just turned out to be my day & questionably was not the best player that day but the beneficiary of putting some bad beats on a few people.

Well John, a most impressive victory and one that may not be topped anytime soon. Congratulations again on becoming a two time APC Grand Champion.

Also a Big thanks to Kelly Hannon for running the tourney. Great job as always!

A big thank you to the dealers as well: Wendy, Kim, Bill, Steve, Randall, Jason, Gil, Rachel, Nehme, Spry, Andrew, Getty, Brittany, and JR

Thanks to Jim Burns for taking the photographs

Thanks to the Famous Pub for hosting the event and especially Shea and Maggie for making sure everyone was taken care of.
